Moving day goes much more smoothly when you're prepared before the moving crew arrives. A little planning can save time, keep your belongings organized, and help your movers work more efficiently.
At All Area Moving, we've been helping families move since 1987. Here are 10 things we recommend doing before your movers arrive.
1. Finish packing before moving day
Unless you've scheduled professional packing services, try to have your boxes packed and ready before the crew arrives. Last-minute packing can slow down your move and add unnecessary time.
2. Clearly label your boxes
Label each box with the room where it belongs. You can also mark boxes containing fragile items so your movers know they require extra care.
3. Decide what isn't going on the moving truck
Set aside medications, important documents, keys, wallets, chargers, jewelry, and anything else you'll personally transport. Keeping these items in a separate area can prevent them from accidentally being loaded.
4. Clear walkways and entrances
Remove clutter from hallways, stairs, porches, and entryways. Clear paths make it easier and safer for movers to carry furniture and boxes out of your home.
5. Make a plan for children and pets
Moving day means doors will be opening and closing frequently. If possible, arrange for young children and pets to stay somewhere safe and out of the movers' path.
6. Empty and prepare your refrigerator
Remove food and clean out your refrigerator before moving day. If you're taking the refrigerator with you, make sure it's properly prepared ahead of time.
7. Disconnect electronics
Unplug televisions, computers, gaming systems, and other electronics. Organizing and labeling cords can make setting everything back up at your new home much easier.
8. Know what needs to be disassembled
Some furniture may need to be taken apart before it can safely fit through doors or onto the moving truck. Your movers can often assist with basic furniture disassembly and reassembly.
9. Do a final walkthrough
Before leaving your old home, check closets, cabinets, drawers, the basement, garage, attic, and outdoor areas. It's surprisingly easy to leave something behind.
10. Ask questions before moving day
If you're unsure about something, ask your moving company ahead of time. Knowing what to expect can make moving day much easier.
